چکیده

We specialize our results on entropy-modified representations of eventbasedgambles to representations of probability-basedgambles by assuming an implicit event structure underlying the probabilities, and adding assumptions linking the qualitative properties of the former and the latter. Under segregation and under duplex decomposition, we obtain numerical representations consisting of a linear weighted utility term plus a term corresponding to information-theoretical entropies. These representations accommodate the Allais paradox and most of the data due to Birnbaum and associates. A representation of mixed event-and probability-based gambles accommodates the Ellsberg paradox. We suggest possible extensions to handle the data not accommodated.

A Theory of Risk without Expected Utility

This paper challenges the use of expected value concepts including expected return, expected utility, non-expected utility and weighted utility in the study of risk. It proves that all such concepts must lead to the rejection of any gambling or insurance proposal. Consequently, theories applying them become futile. Instead, this paper seeks to explain the risky behaviors by the Central Limit Th...

issues in Utility Measurement

Descriptive theories of decision making are constrained by the need to explain the following behavioral phenomena: risk aversion, gambling, purchases of insurance, investment, the paradoxes of Allais and Ellsberg, intransitivity of preference, irregularities of choice, preference reversals, risk judgments, violations of branch independence, the difference between buying and selling prices, viol...

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility

Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...

Comparison of p300 in risk-seeker and risk-averse people during simple gambling task

Risk preference, the degree of tendency to take risk, has a fundamental role at individual and social health and is divided to risk seeker and risk averse. Therefore, the study of neural corelates of risk preferences is essential at the field of psychology and psychiatry. The current study aimed to examine and compare an ERP component named P300 between subjects with different risk preferences....

Do Lottery Gamblers Love Risk or Overweight Small Odds?∗

This paper considers whether lottery betting is best explained by risk-love or an alternative to the expected utility model, namely, the overweighting of small odds. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to use the common setting of state lottery betting to investigate the fit of expected utility theory against an alternative model of non-linear probability weighting. Our results show ...
